The late afternoon sun warmed Amelia's face as she sat on the porch swing, a half-finished book resting in her lap. The rhythmic creak of the swing, the gentle breeze rustling the leaves in the ancient oak tree overhead, and the distant sounds of children playing were all utterly familiar. A quiet contentment settled over her. A text message beeped from her phone on the small table beside her. It was from her mother, a simple "Can we talk later?". Amelia felt a flicker of curiosity, but quickly dismissed it. Her mother often had random thoughts she wanted to share, nothing major.

She picked up her book again, breathing in the scent of old paper and ink. She'd been meaning to finish the chapter for days, but the slow, unhurried pace of the afternoon was too inviting to resist.
